Classic Country Hit Singer Vern Gosdin “The Voice” Dies in Nashville

Classic country singer-songwriter, Vern Gosdin, often referred to as “the Voice”‘ died in Nashville today. Gosdin was 74 and reportedly suffered a stroke several weeks ago.
Vern Gosdin was a native of Woodland, Alabama. He began his career with his brothers, Rex and Ray Gosdin. He and brother, Rex, later became a bluegrass duo and had a country hit in 1967 with “Hangin On”.
Vern Gosdin won the Country Music Association Song of the Year award in 1989 for the classic “Chiseled in Stone”. His other classic country hits included “I Can Tell By the Way You Dance (You’re Gonna Love Me Tonight)”, “Do You Believe Me Now?” and “Set’em Up Joe”.

Newberry Academy in South Carolina Closed for Possible Swine Flu

Newberry Academy, a private school, in South Carolina has closed after some students returned from Mexico with flu like symptoms.
Officials at Newberry Academy said in a statement that seniors were in Mexico earlier this month and some had flu like symptoms when they returned.
The swine flu outbreak in Mexico has claimed over 100 lives.
The spokesperson for the State Department of Health and Environmental Control, Jim Beasley, said tests results on the students could come back as early as this afternoon. However, the Newberry Academy website posted that since the results were not received today the school would be closed tomorrow (Tuesday).
The Newberry Academy is located in Newberry, S.C. adjacent to Interstate 26 which connects Charleston, S.C. with Asheville, N.C.
