The South Carolina Forestry Commission today named Mark Torchi of Woodlawn Drive, Conway as the person burning yard debris that caused the raging Myrtle Beach wildfire. Torchi was ticketed Thursday for failure to notify authorities of the fire and for allowing it to spread to another person’s property.
The investigators said the fire started last Saturday. The fire was thought to have been extinguished but strong winds and low humidity rekindled it. The blaze has so far scorched more than 31 square miles and destroyed 70 homes. It is now 80 % contained.
Mark Torchi’s wife, Megan Brogan, said they called the fire department the second they saw the fire leave their burn pit. She said Horry County Fire Rescue responded to their call Saturday.
The tickets issued to Mark Torchi carry a fine of $732.50.
