Network chairman and chief executive Debra L. Lee said the BET awards show would be “more geared toward Michael Jackson,” even though awards would still be presented.
The BET Awards telecast, to air tonight, has been extended by 30 minutes to allow ample time for Jackson tributes.
The show became a hot item ticket since Jackson’s death this last week. Even the red carpet has been extended to accommodate the additional attendees.
Lee said, ” It”s a total overhaul. Luckily we have enough time to do that.”
Performers, such as Beyonce and Ne-Yo, who worked on their performances for weeks, hoped to change them to honor Jackson, producer Stephen Hill said. Other artists who hadn’t planned to attend the ceremony, including Usher and Justin Timberlake, tried to catch last-minute flights to Los Angeles to participate, Hill said.
Whether or not any of the Jackson family will attend or take part in the BET Awards show is still unknown.
The special BET Awards show and tribute to the king of pop, Michael Jackson, will be hosted by Jamie Foxx and air at 8:00 pm ET from the Shrine Auditorium.
