Tsunami Warning for New Zealand After Major Earthquake

The warning was issued as a precaution.

The 7.8 preliminary magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports, the epicenter of the earthquake was 100 miles west of the city of Invercargill.

The warning center said it is not known if a tsunami was actually generated by the earthquake.
