After a sex change procedure British boxer, Rob Newbiggin, hopes to stay in the ring as a female pugilist.
Right now he is facing a harsh reaction to the news from his hometown of Southport, England. After the news broke in a daily tabloid he is quoted as saying, “I have lost every friend I have ever had in the world in this town.”
Even though his town may have turned against him, his wife Emma is continuing to stand by him. Newbiggin said, “She understands what I’m going through and we are going to stay together.”
The 44 year old feels it doesn’t matter whether he is a mother or a father, just as long as he’s a good parent to his three children.
Newbiggin said, “My friends don’t want to know me. I’ve got people winding their windows down shouting abuse at me while I go for my run–that’s why we are having to relocate. I have to think about my kids.”
Newbiggin is slated to fight Michael Gomez on August 14, in his last male fight. Gomez, 32, reportedly said, “I am totally against hitting women but will make an exception in this case. If he’s confused about his sexuality now, he won’t have a clue when I’ve finished with him.”
When he becomes a woman, the boxer will call himself Mercedes. He said he has been living a lie since he was three.
This man might have a long road ahead of him but you have to admire his decision and courage to go through with his plan.
After the sex change procedure, the boxer hopes to stay in the ring as a female pugilist and continue his 20 year career.
