Approximately 1.2 million pounds of Daniele salami meats have been recalled for possible Salmonella.

William Keene, a senior epidemiologist at the Oregon Public Health Division said, “Daniele brand salami has been identified as the source of a large and ongoing outbreak of salmonellosis. Consumers and food service providers who have any of the recalled products should discard them immediately or return them for a refund.”

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and vomiting and can last four to seven days. Most people recover without treatment but the elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems can become severely dehydrated and it can be fatal in some cases.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report 184 potentially outbreak-associated cases have been identified in 38 states, including eight from Oregon and 14 from Washington.   The earliest recognized cases began in July 2009, and the CDC continues to report cases.

The recalled products of the Rhode Island based, Daniele Inc., are widely sold at groceries, online and warehouse stores including Costco, Walmart, and Sam’s Club. For a complete list of the recalled salami meats visit the FSIS website.

The Daniele salami meats recalled for possible Salmonella all carry a small round USDA mark that says “EST.54″ or “EST.992″.

Wear TOMS comfortable shoes and help the One for One program aid Haiti.

In 2006  Blake Mycoskie, while traveling in Argentina, found children there with no shoes. Thus inspired, he created TOMS Shoes as a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need.

TOMS and the ONE for ONE program have succeeded in giving over 400,000 pairs of shoes to children.

Now, according to TOMS Shoes website, TOMS is helping the earthquake devastated Haiti.

Even if we have already donated in some way, we  can continue to help as we wear TOMS comfortable shoes.

Stronger Drug Warning Label For Meridia Appetite Suppressant Drug

A stronger drug warning label for Meridia appetite suppressant drug is being urged by the FDA following review of raw data from a recent study. The obesity study indicates people with certain health problems who took the prescription drug, Meridia, had more heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular incidents than people getting a placebo.

Meanwhile on Thursday, the European Medicines Agency advised doctors and pharmacists to stop prescribing and dispensing European equivalents of Meridia.

It has been presumed that weight loss drugs could actually help reduce serious health problems such as heart disease. This study, known as the Scout study, is the first to actually test this presumption.

The FDA said the stronger drug warning label for Meridia appetite suppressant drug should indicate that the drug was not to be used by people who have a history of heart attacks or strokes, or who have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
