Treating Hair Loss for Men Could Lie in Gene

A new study, published in Nature, shows treating hair loss for men could lie in a gene responsible for a rare hair loss disorder.

The disorder is hypotrichosis simplex and according to researchers,  it causes hair follicle miniatruization, a process in which hair follicles shrink and narrow, and thick hair is replaced by fine peach fuzz hair. The same process is a key component of male pattern baldness.

Researchers have identified a genetic mutation involved in the hereditary hypotrichosis simplex. The disorder affects under 200,000 Americans.

The mutated gene inhibits a signaling pathway involved in hair growth. As they learn more about this pathway, researchers hope it will lead to new and improved methods for treating hair loss for men.

Researchers Link Smoking to Depression in New Government Report

Researchers link smoking to depression in a new government report verifying what health care experts have long observed.

The researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found people aged 20 and older with depression are twice as likely as others to be cigarette smokers. As the scope of depression increased, so did the number of smokers.

Also, depressed smokers smoke more than smokers without depression and adult smokers who are depressed are less likely to quit than the smokers who are not depressed.

Even mildly depressed people were more likely to smoke than were people with no symptoms of depression.

Research suggests depressed smokers might be self medicating with the cigarettes becoming a calming relaxing mechanism.

Though researchers link smoking  to depression the mental health professionals have been lax in dealing with the tobacco issue.
