pigCDC’s latest swine flu statistics show approximately 3,900 people have died as a result of the H1N1 influenza virus. In addition, 22 million Americans have become ill.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the new numbers today.

The CDC data covers the first six months of the new H1N1 strain’s spread from April through October 17. It has also been estimated that 98,000  people have been hospitalized.

Of the 3,900 who have died, 540 were children younger than 18. The CDC estimates that more than eight million children have become ill from the swine flu with about 36,000 hospitalizations. 12 million adults ages 18 to 64 were hit with the swine flu with about 53,000 hospitalizations and 2,900 deaths.  2 million people age 65 and older were sickened and about 9,000 hospitalized and 440 deaths.

Although the numbers of the latest swine flu statistics are higher than previous case counts, there is still a vaccine shortage.
