Statistics show 1 in 31 adults age 51 and older in the U.S. have low vitamin B12 levels.
Vitamin B12 is found naturally in meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. It is not found naturally in plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables. Our bodies need the B12 vitamin to make new red blood cells and help our nervous systems work correctly.
Over time, anemia can be caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. The signs of anemia include feeling weak, tired and faint; heart palpitations, looking pale and shortness of breath.
The deficiency can also cause tingling of hands and feet, changes in ability to walk, memory problems, sadness and loss of vision.
Some people need to take supplements or B12 shots to get enough. If you recognize the signs of vitamin B12 deficiency in yourself, it is time to visit the doctor.
