Findings reported in the October 15 issue of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology suggest oleocanthal found in extra virgin olive oil could prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
The naturally occurring compound alters the structure of toxic brain chemicals that are believed to contribute to the effects of dementia. This structural change slows down the chemicals’ ability to damage brain nerve cells according to doctors.
“The findings may help identify effective preventative measures and lead to improved therapeutics in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.” said lead author Dr. Paul Breslin, sensory psychobiologist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center In Philadelphia.
World wide nearly 35 million people suffer from the debilitating Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The number is expected to nearly double every 20 years.
In referring to the findings, Dr. Breslin said, “If antibody treatment of Alzheimer’s is enhanced by oleocanthal, the collective anti-toxic and immunological effects of this compound may lead to a successful treatment for an incurable disease. Only clinical trials will tell for sure.”
We will be sure to watch for the clincial trials that may prove oleocanthal in extra virgin olive oil could prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
