According to a study published in the online edition of Journal Neurology, we have yet another good reason to stop smoking. Researchers say smoking may increase the risk of multiple sclerosis in people who have other risk factors for the autoimmune disease.

The results of the study suggest that smokers who have high levels of a protein that protects against the Epstein-Barr virus (a common herpes virus)were twice as likely as non smokers to get multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis affects the brain and central nervous system. There is no known cure. It affects more than 1 million people worldwide.

Symptoms vary from case to case but your muscles, bladder and bowels, eyes, sexual health and speech can be affected.

If you have been looking for yet another good reason to stop smoking, this should be the one!

Coronary Heart Disease is a Good Reason to Stop Smoking

Avoiding coronary heart disease is a good reason to stop smoking.

According to the American Heart Association, cigarette smoking is the most important preventable cause of premature death in the United States. More than 440,000 deaths annually are attributed to it.

Studies confirm evidence that cigarette smoking is a major cause of coronary heart disease and that leads to heart attacks!

Smoking increases blood pressure while at the same time decreases exercise tolerance and increases the tendency for blood clot. In addition, smoking increases the risk of recurrent coronary heart disease after bypass surgery.

Combine smoking with other risk factors such as high cholesterol, obesity or diabetes and your risk of coronary heart disease greatly increases.

The good news, however, is the medicine now available to help smokers quit and the effective nicotine replacement aids to help with the withdrawal symptoms.

As an ex smoker, I know how hard it is to quit but when you arm yourself with the best available resources the challenge eases.

Life can be extremely good when you are free of your nicotine habit and avoiding the risk of coronary heart disease is a good reason to stop smoking!

A new study shows a promising reason to stop smoking for early lung cancer patients. Quitting the tobacco habit can greatly improved their survival chances.

Of the smokers who kicked their habit shortly after diagnosis, 63 to 70 percent were still alive after five years compared to 29 to 33 percent of those who continued to smoke.

The study was made by scientists at Birmingham University, England and was published in the British Medical Journal or BMJ.

“The message is you should never give up on giving up (smoking),” said Amanda Parsons, of the U.K. Centre for Tobacco Control Studies at the University of Birmingham, who led the study. “Even at the stage where you have been diagnosed with early stage lung cancer…if you give up smoking, your body can still partially recover and your risk is reduced,” she said.

A greater survial rate should serve as a motivational and promising reason to stop smoking for early lung cancer patients.
